  • All participants must have completed the gym orientation.
  • All climbing gear must be UIAA-approved equipment. If the gear is not approved, then participant must rent or acquire approved equipment.
  • Participants must correctly pass Climb Iowa’s safety check, or successfully complete the “Intro to Climbing” class. The participant must show how to correctly:
    • put on a commercial climbing harness by “doubling back” all of the buckles.
    • “tie in” to that harness with a “figure eight” followthrough knot and a “double fisherman’s” back-up with a minimum 6” of tail.
    • belay at a reasonable pace without letting go of the brake rope at any time during the test.
    • catch a fall while belaying and return the climber tothe ground at a smooth, controlled speed.
    • demonstrate how to properly check a “figure eight” knot, harness, and belay.
    • demonstrate proper belay commands between climber and belayer.
  • Belayers must remain standing at all times.
  • Belayers must be attentive to their climbers at all times.
  • Belayers must lower climbers at a smooth, controlled speed.
  • Climbers must climb under where their rope is anchored. Do not climb “off route.” Doing so may result in a pendulum swing in the event of a fall.
  • Double check your climber, double check your belay BEFORE starting any climb.
  • NO RUNNING!
